Catching up with SQL 2008 R2

My first brush with SQL was in 1996, with SQL 6.5. It was known as the “mickey mouse” database for some reasons i couldn’t understand then (well, i was still a student u know). I had huge respects for DBA (Database Administrators) and earned my first DBA Certification (MCDBA) from Microsoft in 2002. And subsequently upgraded my certifications several rounds. Yes, i’m on my next round of certification updates. This time i’m eyeing on SQL Server 2008 R2. From a simple database server to now, it has grown so much (Felt like my brains are swelling from picking it up). I just wanted to share a very cool set of resources that i picked up on Channel 9. It is a Developers Training Course for SQL Server 2008 R2. Supposedly to be meant for developers, but i felt IT Pros benefits from understanding the information too. (Warning to IT Pros: Might be a bit too developer focused. Good for DBAs to know the capabilities). To make it easy, i’m listing the topics here. But do visit the main page for a collection; ...

Singapore Windows IT Pro User Group - June Meet Up

Session 1 – Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service Abstract: AD LDS provides directory storage and access for applications, AD LDS uses the same standard application programming interfaces (APIs) as Active Directory to manage and access the application data. The resulting conceptual and programming compatibility makes AD LDS ideal for applications that require directory services, but do not require the complete infrastructure features of Active Directory. Skill Level: 200-350 (Intermediate to Advance) Session 2 – Infrastructure Troubleshooting Abstract: Regardless of how well your infrastructure is designed, mysterious problems always plague Systems Engineers and Administrators. There are a myriad of tools to use, but which is the right one? Using the right tool is crucial is finding out what is wrong and how to fix it. This session introduces Advanced Troubleshooting Tools followed by Debugging techniques to troubleshoot User Mode problems which includes LeakDiag, Process Explorer, Process Monitor, ADPlus utility and Windbg. We will also do an elementary debugging techniques using Windbg. Talking Microsoft Cloud to Electrical Engineers

Last night, I was invited by IEEE GOLD to speak at a cloud computing event they organized for their members. They wanted me to share with them about what Microsoft was doing in cloud computing. (For those who don’t know, IEEE GOLD stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Graduates Of Last Decade. That’s a long name!) I didn’t know what to expect, since I was told the audience would be a mix of current students, graduated students, researchers, faculty, alumni and industry people. And being an IEEE event, it meant that most of the audience came from an electrical engineering background, instead of an IT background like the technical audiences we normally reach out to. I mean, do electrical engineers really care about cloud computing? Well, surprisingly (to me), yes! As I sort of expected, the audience got the most excited when I spoke about the massive investment that Microsoft is putting into building data centers all around the world. I spoke about how Microsoft is using 4th-generation data center designs and cutting-edge technology allows Microsoft to achieve an average PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.22 in their data centers. (As a reference, Google’s twelve-month energy-weighted average PUE is around 1.18. We are only a little bit behind. :)) And as expected, the PUE discussion triggered off a flurry of questions and further discussions around how PUE is measured and optimized in data centers. All in all it was a great night of conversation with a very passionate audience that was very engaged. Here are the slides that I used for the presentation last night: [slideshare id=4168237&doc=microsoftandthecloud-jonathanwong-100520005112-phpapp01]

Media Delivery with Windows Server 2008

I was sharing with SWUG just last week about delivering videos using Windows Server 2008. I was very surprised to learn that many do not know that Windows Server has the ability to deliver videos. I have shared many examples of local deployment of Windows Server 2008 to host video files. This short presentation (about 1 hr), I shared about using Windows Server 2008, loaded with Streaming Media Services and using IIS Smooth media streaming. The session included an overview and also how to setup. It look merely 15 mins to setup both up on the same server. ;-) Easy and fast. Of course, there are a lot more. Anyway, i am sharing my deck of slides used during the session. Feel free to see this video (Example of IIS 7 + Smooth Media Streaming): http://fab.pingdennis.com This is a demo site i use to show IIS7, so might be up or down. :-) ...

The Microsoft Cloud @ SCS Cloud Computing SIG

Earlier this week, we hosted the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) Cloud Computing and Virtualization Special Interest Group (SIG) at our Microsoft offices for a talk on Microsoft’s cloud computing strategy. This event was the first of their “Cloud Computing Learning Journey into Major Cloud Providers” series of talks which they are organizing for their members. This was also one of the events which kicked-off our Microsoft Cloud Week this week. The turnout was fabulous (100+ attendees), and we all had a lot of fun sharing with the SCS folks what Microsoft is doing with the cloud.
