Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day! 😀 I’ve been developing more and more interest in UX (User Experience). UX is a very intriguing subject of study as it involves a lot of thinking, studies, research, testings, and experiments. Here’s a Tumblr blog that I’m following – http://52weeksofux.com. Basically, you’ll get weekly dose of UX for you to read on, ponder upon, and implement on your work throughout the week. I am in my 2nd week, and this particular paragraph strikes me the most.
In our attempt to create amazing user experiences, we often want to push the envelope, to create something new, to show people a bright new future. But too often we fall into the novelty trap. The novelty trap is when, in an attempt to dazzle our clients and our users, we focus too much on the new and not enough on the now.
How true is that! These days people are fighting for novelties and trying to find problems that haven’t been solved, and even sometimes creating “new problems”. Little did we realise that there are so much more that we could do to tackle existing problems. So, get your creative mind ready and get working!

What are the new, now and existing problems? We should be mindful thing a lot of things started off (and dismissed) as novelties that gradually blossom over time. It would be great to see what these novelties really are.

I think novelty can be relative to certain context. For example, in enterprise or public sector, going mobile might not be always applicable for every single project (speaking from experience). So, instead of trying to push for mobile, we could take a look of how to make user experience better by surveying the users, asking them what they would like to see improved, what difficulties they are facing in using the system, etc.
