Top Benefits of HTML5 in Games from Juha from Non-Stop Games by Joyce Huang

HTML 5 is going to be the next big thing.

Juha from Non-Stop Games

It’s promise for openness and interactivity on both web and mobile is definitely one of the key attractions for developers.

Juha from Non-Stop Games shares about his experience building HTML5 games at #MSCampfire. His company built Dollar Isle, which is a web game built on HTML5 – users set out to building an island filled sky scrapers, hotels and casinos that attract visitors around the virtual world.

Juha opens by setting the stage with the definition of HTML5 in his case, which is HTML +JavaScript + CSS3.

Some of the key benefits include:

Benefit #1:  You share the same codebase – by writing with HTML5 you don’t need to waste time writing for multiple platforms and wonder if your users are on Windows phone, iOS and Android.

Benefit #2: Big thing for social games. Little effect to single player or ‘hardcore’ gamers. HTML5 may still be maturing, but it’s seen its impact for social games, particularly with players like Facebook, Zygna, Microsoft and Apple  driving this.

Benefit #3: It’s not Flash, it’s “open”. Yup, that means that you never need to have to worry about whetherAdobe is going to make crazy changes to it sometime or another.

Benefit #4: Your games will always be up to date. This is important for the gaming experience. Users sometimes miss theupdates that you push to them through the app store, so once they get bored of your game with it’s current features, you might lose them. This is especially so in social games that need to be constantly updated with new products.

Benefit #5: It’s not dependent on app stores. You are in control of your own content. That means you don’t have to wait to publish your app to users, or even worry about whether it will be published at all. But if you don’t wrap into native you might lose the biggest benefits of app stores (easy payment & discovery).

Benefit #6: Instant accessibility: no need for plugins so works really quickly! Juha even demo-ed Dollar Isle, which even runs in native apps such as Twitter.com
