#1 Wearing New Clothes

It is believed that we should start the New Year off right with new clothes. From head to toe, all your clothes and accessories should be brand new. Some girls prefer wearing traditional dress like the Qi Pao, but usually most girls just wear modern western-style clothing. People wear red on Chinese New Year because red represents prosperity, fortune and luck.  At Q0010,  there are plenty of casual work dress and party dresses that are red for the festive season. This will be perfect for Chinese New Year. Ladies, click here. Gentlemen, click here.

#2 Red Packets (Ang Baos)

angbao

Retail Price: $2.00, Qoo10 Price: $0.90

Traditionally, the Chinese always give red packets during New Year. Red packets are usually given out by married couples to single people, especially to the children. The amount of the money contained in the red packet usually ends with an even digit, in accordance with Chinese beliefs, as odd numbered money gifts are associated with funerals. The amount of money is usually notes (and not coins) to make it difficult to judge the amount inside before opening.

#3 Chinese New Year goodies

pineappletarts

Pineapple tarts refer to small, bite-sized pastries containing large proportion of butter and egg yolk. They are rich, buttery and melt in your mouth. The pineapple jam is made from caramelizing grated fresh pineapple with sugar. Considered as a type of “festive cookies”, it is consumed during the Chinese New Year period – one of the Singapore’s top pastries since 1998. It’s featured on Lian He Zhao Bao and visited by the SHE group. These are some suspicious foods that’ll fill your tummy with all the good luck and fortune you’ll need for the Lunar New Year.

Yu sheng (Lo Hei “Raw Fish”)

yusheng

Yu sheng means “raw fish” is a traditional dish, served  on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year. It is a salad dish made of thin slices of raw fish and various spices, mixed via tossing by diners. The ingredients and tossing action alludes to prosperity and longevity, adding to good wishes for the new year. Hurry! Crab Paradise is having $6.50 for Fa Cai Salmon Yu Sheng and it is only available for early birds!

Chinese New Year gift hampers

Gift giving is an important part of the Chinese New Year. When visiting other relatives for family visitations, there are many occasions when gifts are given or received. New Year gift hampers convey the most sincere best wishes from the sender to the recipient.  The fruit basket is a ubiquitous symbol of Chinese New Year and of course, we include other gifts as well in the basket, such as abalone, wine and tonic products.
