Microsoft Student Partners Singapore - September Summary

It’s been an exciting September for the Microsoft Student Partners in Singapore! Energized from a rewarding outing in August where they were treated with a trip to Adventure Cove Waterpark - a theme park in Singapore, the MSPs ran a myriad of events in September. On the 2nd of September, MSPs volunteered at TechFemme 2015, an event that aims to empower women in technology. The MSPs helped to usher the participants and evangelized about the Microsoft Surface, Xbox One, and Microsoft Office. Their involvement greatly influenced the successful run of the event especially since they had the arduous task of moving the massive Xbox kiosks across buildings as the event spanned different areas as the day progressed. The next day, Singapore MSPs were involved in the Microsoft AHQ Kickoff for FY16. Donovan Cho went up on stage to give a heartwarming speech about his experience and passion for Microsoft as a true fan of Windows 10 and as a Microsoft Student Partner. Next, Jason Chee - Microsoft Student Partner of the Year - was interviewed live on stage by Jeff Bullwinkel, Associate General Counsel for APJ. He shared about how he had started his Microsoft journey (you can read more about that here) and on the plethora of programs Microsoft offers to students to help every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. Next, on the 9th of September, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore held an event called Young Tech Fest which saw students across many educational institutes coming down to try their hand at code and learn more about technology. Microsoft had a booth to showcase our products such as the Microsoft Surface, Xbox One, and Windows 10. The MSPs were on-site to help market Microsoft’s technologies and ran workshops on Kodu, DreamSpark, and Azure Student Benefit. Lastly, Microsoft ran the monthly MSP Meet Up on the 12th of September where the latest information about the program was shared. One of the MSP Alumni, Danish Lukawski, popped by to give a talk on how to “Be Your Brand and Tell Your Story”. Also, one of the MSPs, David Lim, gave a sharing session on Developing for Kinect v2. We have a lot of events lined up for October and we can’t wait to share them with you next month!

King of the East

Local Chapter | Bogor To enhance the students skills in Survey and Mapping, community members from the Local Chapter | Bogor (Adi Sanggoro Vocational School) spent around 6 weeks doing field data collection of house numbers in Jakarta. With their extensive background in survey and mapping, this field activity was definitely not a new thing for our 4 musketeers Wiwit, Tanti, Naufal, and Rizki. (Remember our 2 brave guys who conquered the biggest textile market in SEA?) Understanding the Market With 28 million people in the metropolitan area, 6 satellite cities, and nearly 10 million vehicles in daily use, Jakarta is nominated as one of the biggest city in the world. Therefore preparation to define the scope of work was needed to ensure they address the collection in the important area from a user perspective. From the HERE Jakarta office, the duo Risdianto Ade Rubi and Iqbal Dharmaputra also played a significant role to identify the correct area and regularly monitor the activities on a daily basis. The HERE Helmet Preparation become imperfect without good execution, and execution will not reach it’s optimal without good equipment. Introducing the HERE Helmet – the helmet looks like an ordinary motorbike helmet, but if we looked closer, the HERE Helmet uses the “Contour Action Camera" to help us record all the house numbers and point of interest during the collection. By using this special helmet, we can improved the capability, efficiency, speed, and quality of the collection particularly during the collection and post collection step. Action speaks louder than words. Up to date, we have collected 4,000+ new point address and updated it into HERE Map Creator. Good Job Guys!

Tokyo Game Show 2015

Three weeks ago, I made my way to Japan for the Tokyo Game Show 2015 (TGS'15). For those who are unaware, TGS'15 is an annual games show held in Japan where many different publishers and indie developers alike come to Japan to showcase their games. There’s cosplay, game demos and many other interesting events. The show itself spans a few halls which are spread out across two buildings. The main events and booths take place at halls 1 - 8 which featured all the big name companies like Sony, EA, Konami and so on. While it was a pity that Microsoft did not attend TGS this year, here are the highlights: ...

HERE Explores the Outdoors!

It is truly amazing to see that the HERE Expert Community Program in the Philippines has grown to include so many interesting individuals over the course of a few years. Members come from such diverse backgrounds and age groups. From students to government officials to developers, the HERE Expert Community Program members share the same drive – that is, to share their knowledge and create the best map of the country! Miko Santos is one of these individuals. A mobile developer and an avid mountaineer, Miko is one of HERE Philippines’ leading community members in terms of outdoor mapping since July of this year. With about 21 mountains and over 300 KM of hiking trails added in Map Creator, he has shown what it means to be a HERE Explorer! Taking his love for the outdoors and his passion for mapping, he has also created PH Mountains - a comprehensive guide app (available on iOS and Android) to the multitude of mountains in the Philippines. Users of PH Mountains can search for mountains and photos, organize their trips, check the weather, cross off their climbing goals with a personal mountain checklist, and search for the nearest outdoor stores to buy gear for that next climb.
