*SCAPE’s “Meet The VCs” by Nicholas Tan

I recently got an opportunity to share what Microsoft is doing in the Singapore startup scene at *SCAPE, where HubQuarters is one of many established local co-working spaces. In general, the audience seemed surprised at the existence of BizSpark, which offers local tech startups more than 900 current, full-featured software development tools, platform technologies, and server products to build software applications. I also got asked many interesting questions, the most repeated of which I’ll reproduce below.

What key benefits does BizSpark give my startup?

Most business people asked this question, so my non-techie response would be: For three years – free software, cloud hosting credits worth USD150 monthly (can be used for anything from hosting your website to online storage), Microsoft developer accounts, and a strong community network of over 500 tech startups in Singapore. Also, the occasional complimentary invite to startup/business events and first-access to Microsoft promotions.

I’m looking to work with someone from/build my app on top of/explore partnerships with [insert Microsoft product].

Let us know specifically what you have in mind, and we’ll try to make the introduction. =)

I have a great idea for a startup, how do I proceed?

If you’re still in the ideation stage, we will verify the application by asking for some proof of execution for the application you are developing, whether it be wireframes, UI mockups, or even an ACRA registration number. Be sure to fill in all fields on the BizSpark website application forms – they are approved by human beings, not bots! – so submissions with dummy text or random URLs will be flagged and rejected.

I’m running a tech consultancy, is BizSpark for me?

One of the key prerequisites for BizSpark is that your startup must be actively developing software or applications. If your consultancy work is something you do on the side of your software development, you can apply. However, it cannot be your only core business.

My startup is based overseas, can I still apply?

I look after the startups incorporated in Singapore, so your application at www.bizspark.com will be redirected to your respective country’s BizSpark Champ and they will follow up with you from there.

Sounds almost too good to be true, what’s in it for Microsoft?

As a big tech company, we want to grow our next generation of partners from day one. Big companies have also traditionally struggled with innovation, and what better way to keep our feet on the ground then by working with cutting-edge startups?
