This year’s Splash Awards organized by Singapore Computer Society saw many brilliant student teams compete against each other in pre-tertiary and tertiary categories, across various sub-themes including “Pride in Every Job”, “Success: Unlimited”, “Right Choice, Bright Future”, and “School & Family: One Team”. In its 12th year, the Splash Awards’ objective is to spur interest in Infocomm amongst students, provide students with an opportunity to gain exposure and knowledge on application development, gain experience and prepare for the industry, and encourage innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship through application development and possibilities.
In total, there were 86 competing teams made up of more than 214 students. The Finals and Talent Showcase was held on the 24th of August and graced by Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah.
After months of hard work, the following teams received the Merit Prize in the Pre-Tertiary category:
- Team Unbelievable – Zhonghua Secondary
- Team Skillzmap – Raffles Institution
- Team Blue – Raffles Institution
- Team inScribe – Hwa Chong Institution
The following teams received the Merit Prize in the Tertiary category:
- Team 3xclusive – Singapore Polytechnic
- Team SIDMExcel – Nanyang Polytechnic
- Team CE – ITE
- Team Quest – Singapore Polytechnic
Nanyang Polytechnic received the Top Performing School title. Team Quest from Singapore Polytechnic received the Most Innovative Idea award.
Team RevUp from NUS High clinched the Champion of the Pre-Tertiary category, while Team 3osy from Nanyang Polytechnic were named Champion of the Tertiary category.
Competing in the Open sub-theme, Team Quest made up of final year Business Information Technology students from Singapore Polytechnic Htet Htet Aung, Chua Yi Fang, and Song Tianqi created an app called Quest that is a peer-learning and peer-mentoring solution targeted at students. Its slogan is “We connect you to your peers” – allowing tertiary students in Singapore to connect with other students and seek assistance and guidance from other senior or more knowledgeable students. Also competing in the Open sub-theme, Team RevUp from NUS High School for Maths and Science comprising of Girish Kumar and Ryan Chew showed off their solution RevUp that uses Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to analyze sentences and automatically generate practice questions for educators. It can identify portions of selected sentences to be important and craft effective distractors in the multiple choice questions presented to the learner.
Finally, competing in the “Pride in Every Job” sub-theme, Team 3osy from Nanyang Polytechnic made up of Siti Nur Anisha Binte Mohamad Jani, Tan Hui Shan Quenna, and Nur Shafiqah Binte Suhaimi created an app called Happy Working Lor that allows individuals to submit pictures with captions, short stories, or inspiring quotes to highlight either aspects of their own jobs or those of others. By doing so, they hope to inspire other Singaporeans to have a better working attitude and to enjoy their jobs with a positive mind-set. Users can also keep track of their own happy moments at work and also those who inspired them to work with passion.
