Windows Phone Challenge 5.1, Bridging the Gap Refreshed by Tan Chun Siong

We’re back folks! Thanks for waiting. We are refreshing Windows Phone Challenge #5 with #5.1, and the theme is still “Bridging the GAP” on Windows Phone. Here are the ideas, we will be judging these ideas heavily on UX/UI. Please note that there is a limit of 1 prize per developer. The competition timeline is from 3rd March to 31st March 2014. The deadline for submission is 31st March 2014 2359hrs.

Approved Challenge Ideas

  1. IPPT Training application Create an application comparable to 6 weeks training but gearing it towards the 5 IPPT stations.
    Essential Features
    This application should also show you the different scores (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Pass with Incentive, Pass) needed for different vocation/age. You should be able to track your progress of the 5 IPPT stations over the span of weeks. The training regime might not necessary be the actual station itself: Example when training for 2.4km run, you can improve it via “Interval Training”. “Interval Training” can be the progressive exercise you would need to improve over the span of weeks. Another example for Standing Board Jump. You might want to have a mixture of tuck jumps, box jumps etc… that the users would need to do over the span of weeks. Check out 6 weeks training on how the user needs to gradually improve their score. There should be an test (on the actual IPPT station) after each week of training. Example if you have done “Interval Training” for 1 week, there is a test to record your 2.4km run timing. If you have done “box jump, tuck jumps” for a week, there is an test for Standing Board Jump
    Optional Features
    Speech synthesis similar to 6 weeks training to remind the user that their rest time is up, and to carry on for their next set.

  4. Car Park Rate application for Cars and Motorcycle
    An application to check the parking rates for both Cars and Motorcycle in Singapore with the below features comparable or better than http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/sgcarparkrates/7b6d3d0b-c431-4164-bf05-a1c1918bc3e8
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. Users should be able to list the carpark sorted from the nearest carpark. There should be a seperate list of carpark available for Motorcycles. Please included free parking, paid parking rates are No Parking for Motorcycle. You might be able to find the list of carpark for motorcycles on singapore bikes forum. Users should also be able to pin specific carparks as secondary tiles for quick access to the information.
    Additional Features
    The secondary tile would be updated regularly and display the price of the car park base on the timing of the phone.

  5. Basic Driving Theory Test application

    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. You application should also supply the correct answer should the user get it wrong.

  6. Advance & Riding Driving Theory Test application
    A test application comparable to http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/final-theory-test/bd6fe01b-092c-4241-b49d-e63a894aa0f0
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. In addition to Final Theory for Driving, you need to include Riding Theory Test questions. You application should also supply the correct answer should the user get it wrong.

  7. SG Hawker Food Application
    A Hawker center finding application comparable to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.singapore.good.hawker.food
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. The application should be able to list down all the Hawker center in Singapore. This list of all hawker centers in Singapore might be a simple text list. The application should have a location base feature to list down nearby Hawker centers and show these nearby hawker centers on here map. For each hawker center, you should provide information such as top 3 popular stalls and food to try.There should be a feature to do a reverse lookup to recommend hawker stalls base on the selected type of food. You should have at least 10-20 popular singapore dishes (i.e fish ball noodles, laksa, prawn noodles), and recommend the recommend the hawker centers base on the food selection, and display these hawker stalls on a map.
    Users should be able to use voice recognition to launch the app “SG Hawker where’s the nearest hawker center” and “SG Hawker where’s the best {fishball noodles}” and the application should show the user relevant information.
    Optional Features
    Users would be able to take picture of the food at specific hawker. These pictures will be displayed at the “hawker center” page.

  8. SG Tech Events application
    An events list application for Tech Events happening in Singapore
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. This application will aggregate events from 3 different places and list them as a single list. The aggregation data source would be www.thelist.sg, http://www.techinasia.com/tech-startup-events/ and http://hackerspace.sg/calendar
    You would need to make use of parsing services / regular express to parse these web based datasource into readable content on the windows phone app. You would also need to filter out events which are specific to singapore.
    Optional Features
    Consider using certain algorithm to cleverly match identical events into 1 item.
    Allowing uses to add events which they are interested into their Microsoft account’s calendar

  9. Singapore/Worldwide Street Photography application
    A street photography gallery application with comparable UI to http://www.windowsphone.com/en-in/store/app/mowithlove/be91f7a8-87bf-46fd-baf6-842e40ab3654 with the below features. The purpose of this application is to showcase the capabilities of Windows Phone’s camera and its suitability for street photography.
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. This application needs to have a photostream which would dynamically load user submitted photos (base on chronological order of submission) of street photography in Singapore or other parts of the word using Windows Phone. In addition to submitting the photos to a photo hosting platform, users can also share the photo by uploading to Facebook and Twitter. Users would be prompted of their windows phone’s Make and Model, and the photos should attach the information example “Taken with Nokia Lumia 1020” when the picture is tapped from the photostream and displayed in its own page. The polaroid border around the photo is optional.
    Optional Features
    The users would to apply to apply basic filters based on Nokia Imaging SDK or other frameworks to apply effects to their photos. You may wish to charge the user to unlock the filter feature, or in-app purchase to buy more filters.
    Voting feature would be available and there would be a “popular” section it would dynamically load user submitted photos base on popularity

  10. Stray cat photography / Gallery App
    A stray cat photography/gallery application with comparable UI to http://www.windowsphone.com/en-in/store/app/mowithlove/be91f7a8-87bf-46fd-baf6-842e40ab3654 with the below features. The purpose of this application is to showcase the capabilities of Windows Phone’s camera.
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. This application needs to have a photostream which would dynamically load user submitted photos (base on chronological order of submission) of cats photograph in the world using Windows Phone. In addition to submitting the photos to a photo hosting platform, users can also share the photo by uploading to Facebook and Twitter. Users would be prompted of their windows phone’s Make and Model, and the photos should attach the information example “Taken with Nokia Lumia 1020” when the picture is tapped from the photostream and displayed in its own page. The polaroid border around the photo is optional.
    Optional Features
    The users would to apply to apply basic filters based on Nokia Imaging SDK or other frameworks to apply effects to their photos. You may wish to charge the user to unlock the filter feature, or in-app purchase to buy more filters.

  11. A Singapore landscape photography gallery app
    A Singapore landscape photography gallery application with comparable UI to http://www.windowsphone.com/en-in/store/app/mowithlove/be91f7a8-87bf-46fd-baf6-842e40ab3654 with the below features. The purpose of this application is to showcase the capabilities of Windows Phone’s camera and its suitability for landscape and scenic photography for Singapore landmarks.
    Essential Features
    The application must be available as a free application with optional ad support. This application needs to have a photostream which would dynamically load user submitted photos (base on chronological order of submission) of scenic / landmark photography in Singapore or other parts of the word using Windows Phone. In addition to submitting the photos to a photo hosting platform, users can also share the photo by uploading to Facebook and Twitter. Users would be prompted of their windows phone’s Make and Model, and the photos should attach the information example “Taken with Nokia Lumia 1020” when the picture is tapped from the photostream and displayed in its own page. The polaroid border around the photo is optional. You might consider allowing users to type in more details on the picture. It can be a free from textblock for users to mention their technique and timing of day which the picture is taken.
    Optional Features
    The users would to apply to apply basic filters based on Nokia Imaging SDK or other frameworks to apply effects to their photos. You may wish to charge the user to unlock the filter feature, or in-app purchase to buy more filters.
    Voting feature would be available and there would be a “popular” section it would dynamically load user submitted photos base on popularity

  3. There are no sudden death for Challenge #5.1
  4. You need to fulfill all essential criteria to be considered for the entry.
  5. We have updated the list of non-eligibility personnel for this competition

Frequently asked question FAQ

Q. Who is eligible for this challenge? A. If you have a windows phone developer account which is tied to a Singapore live id, you are eligible for this competition. Employees, Employee’s Immediate Family and Interns of Microsoft and subsidiaries are not eligible for this challenge. Government officials are not eligible for this challenge. Do note that if you are residing outside of Singapore and wish to compete this online, we will not ship the prizes overseas. Do contact us at win8sg@microsoft.com and let us know in advance if you wish to participate remotely.

Q. If I’m competing for all ideas, is it possible for me to win in all the challenges? A. We will restrict the maximum number of prizes to 1 for each developer.

Q. Are specific tools and products needed for this competition? A. For Windows Phone 8 development, you would need a Windows 8 environment, Visual Studio and Windows Phone 8 SDK. You would also need a windows phone developer account to publish the application onto the store.

Q. Where will the winning list be posted? A. A blog post on weshipcode.com will announce the winners for the Windows Phone Challenge. We will also drop the winners a email to notify them of their winning entries.

Q. So what’s the maximum number of phones can I win? A. 1 phones for each developer.

Q. Can I work with a team, or is this an individual challenge? A. Yes you may work in a team.

Q. If I have a team of 10, do we get 10 phones if we produced the best application for one idea? A. No. 1 phone for each challenge.

Q. Are existing applications upgraded counted for this challenge? A. Nope. You application has to be a net new application.

Q. Can I exchange Lumia 1020/1520 for other phones? A. No, but I can help you ask if some other winning developers is/are willing to barter trade.

Q. Will I retain the IP of my entry? A. Yes, you will retain all rights and IP of your entry. We will however make use of public content (list on www.windowsphone.com), such as app icon images and description for the purpose of promotion. Please respect all copyrighted content when developing your application.

Q. How are you going to judge the entries? A. We will compare the entries for each challenges. The best entry, which fulfills the minimum criteria above will be award the phone. On a case-by-case basis, if necessary, we would need you to improve on user experience and design before awarding on the phone.

  • 40% : Fulfilment of requirement
  • 30% : Design and User experience on the application
  • 30% : appropriate usage of Windows Phone 8 specific capabilities (Live Tiles, Speech, LockScreen, NFC) to demonstrate the capability of the platform

Q. Is design and UX important? A. Yes, please do put in effort on designing and planning for good user experience.

Q. How do I know if my application (with speech capabilities) is supported for English (united kingdom) and English (united states)? A. After setting your “speech language” in “settings” -> “Speech” to “English (united kingdom)”, press and hold your windows phone’s “windows button”, click on the “?” button on the top right hand side, and look at the “apps” tab.
