Windows Hello says “Hello World!” in Windows 10 by Terence Lim

Windows Hello is a new feature in Windows 10 that will allow users to sign into their Windows phones, tablets, laptops or personal computers with just a scan of the face, iris, or fingerprint to verify their identity, thus replacing the need for a password or PIN to gain access.

Well, first thing that popped into my head: what if someone decides to impersonate me by trying to log on using my picture? Turns out that it’s not going to be that easy to fool Windows Hello! The face recognition engine uses Intel’s RealSense 3D camera and infrared technology to accurately detect and authenticate the user, even in a variety of lighting conditions.

Apart from increase in convenience, Windows Hello is also a more secure way of authentication compared to using passwords. In Microsoft’s words:

You — uniquely you — plus your device are the keys to your Windows experience, apps, data and even websites and services – not a random assortment of letters and numbers that are easily forgotten, hacked, or written down and pinned to a bulletin board. Modern sensors recognize your unique personal characteristics to sign you in on a supporting Windows 10 device.

Of course, convenience and simplicity should never sacrifice security and privacy. Windows Hello offers enterprise-grade security that will meet the requirements of organizations with some of the strictest requirements and regulations. It’s a solution that government, defence, financial, health care and other related organizations will use to enhance their overall security, with a simple experience designed to delight.

Microsoft also announced the Passport feature which allows developers to build Windows Hello authentication into 3rd-party apps, services and websites. Time to say goodbye to the hassle of having to remember complex passwords for all the different websites and services, because Hello has made you the password! Just sit back, relax, and remember to smile 🙂
